Breech Release Sessions

Breech Release Sessions: Midwife-Led Support for Breech Babies

Your Baby’s Position

If your baby is breech, first… pause.

Your baby is not a problem to fix. Breech is not a failure.
Some babies remain in this position for reasons we don’t fully understand, and many can still be born safely this way.

If you’d like to explore your options for breech birth, you can learn more here.

And, if you feel drawn to gently support your body and create more space for movement, that’s where this work comes in.

What a Breech Release Session Is

A Breech Release Session is a midwife-led, hands-on session focused on soft tissue release, pelvic and uterine space, nervous system regulation, and the way your baby is engaging within your body.

This is not a technique used to “turn the baby.”

It is a way of working with your body to reduce restriction, restore balance, and create the conditions that may allow your baby to move—if they are able and ready.

What Makes This Different

This goes beyond standard positioning exercises or generalized adjustments.

It is a direct, responsive approach that works with:

  • fascial and ligamentous tension

  • asymmetry in the pelvis and surrounding structures

  • patterns of holding in the body

  • and the nervous system’s role in muscular tone and space

Sessions are guided moment-to-moment, based on how your body responds, not a fixed protocol.

Before or After an ECV

Some families choose to explore this work:

  • before an ECV, to soften tissues and improve overall conditions for movement

  • or after an ECV, to help the body re-balance and reduce tension created by forceful manipulation

This approach does not rely on external force.
Instead, it supports the body in finding more space and responsiveness from within.

What a Session May Include

Each session is individualized, but may involve:

  • Gentle soft tissue and myofascial release

  • Pelvic and sacral mobility work

  • Nervous system-focused care to reduce guarding and tension

  • Gravity-assisted positioning using a slant board

  • Midwife-guided techniques that encourage rotation without force

Will it Work?

Sometimes babies turn after one or two sessions.
Sometimes they don’t.

This work is not about controlling the outcome.

It’s about:

  • creating better conditions

  • reducing unnecessary tension

  • and supporting your body, regardless of what your baby ultimately chooses

Breech presentation is often framed with urgency or concern, and that alone can shift how a woman holds her body—creating tension, guarding, and a sense that something is “wrong.”

Part of this work is gently unwinding that.

Not by dismissing real considerations, but by helping your body settle, so decisions can be made from a place of clarity rather than pressure.

Whether you move toward a vaginal breech birth or a cesarean, your body still benefits from:

  • reduced tension

  • improved mobility

  • and a more regulated nervous system

Even when baby remains breech, many women notice:

  • improved comfort

  • more ease in their body

  • and a greater sense of calm and clarity moving into birth

When to Consider a Session

  • Before 32 weeks:
If baby is breech earlier in pregnancy, a general body balancing session can be helpful to support alignment and reduce developing patterns of restriction.

  • Around 34–35 weeks:
This is often an ideal time to begin focused Breech Release work, as baby’s position is more established while there is still space for movement.

  • Later in pregnancy:
Sessions can still be beneficial, especially in subsequent pregnancies where the body may respond more quickly.

  • Before or after an ECV:
This work can be used beforehand to soften tissues and improve overall conditions, or afterward to help the body re-balance and release tension following a more forceful attempt at turning.

  • At any point tension or asymmetry is present:
If your body feels tight, restricted, or uneven, this work can be supportive regardless of whether your baby turns.

Is This a Good Fit for You?

You might feel drawn to this work if:

  • You’ve recently found out your baby is breech and want a more grounded way to move forward

  • You want a gentle, hands-on approach rather than force-based methods

  • You feel tightness, asymmetry, or restriction in your body

  • You’ve tried positioning techniques without change

  • You want to support your body whether or not your baby turns

  • You’re preparing for an ECV and want to optimize conditions beforehand

  • You’ve had an ECV and want to restore balance afterward
